Summary

A family's love is tested when heroes-turned-criminals are forced to make the hardest decisions of their lives in this unforgettably moving story of love, resistance, and the lasting consequences of the Second World War。

After。 Santa Cruz, California, 1953。 Jean-Luc and Charlotte Beauchamps have left their war-torn memories of Paris behind to live a quiet life in America with their son, Sam。 They have a house in the suburbs, they've learned to speak English, and they have regular get-togethers with their outgoing American neighbors。 Every minute in California erases a minute of their lives before -- before the Germans invaded their French homeland and incited years of violence, hunger, and fear。 But their taste of the American Dream shatters when officers from the U。N。 Commission on War Crimes pull-up outside their home and bring Jean-Luc in for questioning。

Before。 Paris, France, 1944。 Germany has occupied France for four years。 Jean-Luc works at the railway station at Bobigny, where thousands of Jews travel each day to be "resettled" in Germany。 But Jean-Luc and other railway employees can't ignore the rumors or what they see on the tracks: too many people are packed into the cars, and bodies are sometimes left to be disposed of after a train departs。 Jean-Luc's unease turns into full-blown panic when a young woman with bright green eyes bursts from the train one day alongside hundreds of screaming, terrified passengers, and pushes a warm, squirming bundle into his arms。

Told from alternating perspectives, While Paris Slept reflects on the power of love, loss, and the choices a mother will make to ensure the survival of her child。 At once a visceral portrait of family ties and a meditation on nurture's influence over identity, this heartbreaking debut will irreversibly take hold of your heart。

This book had the potential to be quite a bit more than it was。 The moral dilemma that frames the second half of this book was definitely gut wrenching and had no easy answer。 And that was one of the problems with the book for me - the solution presented seemed to be too easily reached and accepted by both parties。 For the agonizing years David and Sarah spent searching for Samuel and for the fact that Samuel was not really the son of Jean Luc and Charlotte - it just all seemed too convenient an This book had the potential to be quite a bit more than it was。 The moral dilemma that frames the second half of this book was definitely gut wrenching and had no easy answer。 And that was one of the problems with the book for me - the solution presented seemed to be too easily reached and accepted by both parties。 For the agonizing years David and Sarah spent searching for Samuel and for the fact that Samuel was not really the son of Jean Luc and Charlotte - it just all seemed too convenient and easy。 I thought the history of the occupation of Paris and the question of "what does collaboration look like" was interesting but not fully examined。 It just fell short of showing me what conclusions the author had reached about this question。 I don't even know what conclusion Jean Luc had reached for his own actions in the 1940's。Although the story was slow moving, I did want to finish the book and cared enough to want to know where the author was going。 I thought the best character was Samuel。 His behavior seemed very believable given the confusion and turmoil he was suddenly thrown into and I truly ached for him。 My sympathies were divided between the two sets of parents and I could not identify a "villain。" The moral dilemma was real - I just didn't think the author succeeded in portraying it for me。 。。。more

Very few books can stay with you for a long time after reading them…My heart is still thumping and my tears are still drying as I write this 5 star review。 This tragic, heartbreaking story did not fail from start to finish to grip and pull me into the character’s emotions and unthinkable decisions they had to make。 This was truly, beautifully written。 I was worried it wouldn’t end in the right way… that the writer might somehow lose the story and plot。 It ended in the most ‘perfect’ heartwarming Very few books can stay with you for a long time after reading them…My heart is still thumping and my tears are still drying as I write this 5 star review。 This tragic, heartbreaking story did not fail from start to finish to grip and pull me into the character’s emotions and unthinkable decisions they had to make。 This was truly, beautifully written。 I was worried it wouldn’t end in the right way… that the writer might somehow lose the story and plot。 It ended in the most ‘perfect’ heartwarming way。 Completely shattered emotionally by this novel。 5++ stars。 。。。more

Read this start to finish last might and loved it bar my pet hate - the addition of penicillin/antibiotics in Auschwitz。 Penicillin wasn't available in the camps for anyone not even the SS and it didn't come in pill form until after the war。 This book covers a more unusual aspect of the war - the fate of the children taken for their safety but then facing the return to their parents who they didn't know。 I cried buckets。 I loved how the characters weren't superheroes but real life people who bec Read this start to finish last might and loved it bar my pet hate - the addition of penicillin/antibiotics in Auschwitz。 Penicillin wasn't available in the camps for anyone not even the SS and it didn't come in pill form until after the war。 This book covers a more unusual aspect of the war - the fate of the children taken for their safety but then facing the return to their parents who they didn't know。 I cried buckets。 I loved how the characters weren't superheroes but real life people who became heroic at times i。e。 they were scared, at first too scared to resist and then they made decisions with devastating consequences。 But their actions weren't out of character if that makes sense i。e。 the author hinted their bravery was there if someone/something stoked it。 Also explored the definition of collaboration - something I find fascinating。 Way too easy for anyone who hasn't lived under an occupation to condemn the actions of those who have。 Five stars。 。。。more

Beautifully written book taking place in the 1940’s and 1950’s。 The story begins in France where a mother has to make a heartbreaking decision for her child as she’s about to be taken to Auschwitz。 Fast forward to the 1950’s in California and the characters’ lives intertwine。 Highly recommend this book

This book gives thought into what it must have been like to live in Paris during WWII through multiple perspectives。 At times I felt like the suspense could have been written better and it felt like it jumped forward in time in 9 years and just grazed over what happened in the in between times。 It could have added depth to at least partially cover those years。

This book made me satisfied! The words are powerful and the story is simply beautiful。There is an impressive work on the psychological and behavior aspects that make us go through all the emotions。 The personalities of the characters, their faults, their strengths, everything is coherent, and makes the book very realistic, fluid and pleasant to read。The characters had to make choices in the face of certain cruel situations but which made the book enticing and filled with emotions。I really thank This book made me satisfied! There are a lot of books written that are set in one of the other of the wars。 I space my reading of them out。 This was well done and a good read。

I struggled with the ending of this book。 It felt unrealistic and incomplete。

What a heartbreaking, beautiful story。 Full of love, loss, hope, and faith。 This story dives into nature vs nurture, biology vs chance, and wrongs vs rights。 There’s no way to tell which parents are wrong or right。 I did not like how the bio parents were so accusatory to the adoptive parents, and how they resented them so much after what they did for their child。 It’s a hard place to say what should, would, or could have happened in a time of deplorable war and neglect。 Overall, it was a beautif What a heartbreaking, beautiful story。 Full of love, loss, hope, and faith。 This story dives into nature vs nurture, biology vs chance, and wrongs vs rights。 There’s no way to tell which parents are wrong or right。 I did not like how the bio parents were so accusatory to the adoptive parents, and how they resented them so much after what they did for their child。 It’s a hard place to say what should, would, or could have happened in a time of deplorable war and neglect。 Overall, it was a beautiful story 。。。more

#28 While Paris Slept by Ruth Druart 👍+ the book starts in Paris during the occupation in WWII。 A young man is working on the railroad when a young Jewish mother who is being forced on the train to Auschwitz hands her baby to him and asks him to save her。 The story follows the journey of the young man and the baby。 I was in Paris a few months ago and recognized many of the places he talked about and then I had returned from Germany right before I read it and visited the Dachau concentration camp #28 While Paris Slept by Ruth Druart 👍+ the book starts in Paris during the occupation in WWII。 A young man is working on the railroad when a young Jewish mother who is being forced on the train to Auschwitz hands her baby to him and asks him to save her。 The story follows the journey of the young man and the baby。 I was in Paris a few months ago and recognized many of the places he talked about and then I had returned from Germany right before I read it and visited the Dachau concentration camp which probably made me feel even more of a connection with the story。 There were a couple of things here and there in the book that didn’t really fit for me but overall I would highly recommend。 #libby #audiobook #whileparisslept 。。。more

Why do we hear almost nothing from Charlotte and Jean Luc’s perspective in the second half?
